Join us for a Mock Mediation presented by a team from Peckar & Abramson.

This session will demonstrate some typical claims that lead to disputes between parties to a construction contract.  It will explore the application of contractual provisions to evaluate the circumstances of the claim, and show how mediation would be carried out in an effort to find a resolution to the dispute.

Curt Martin - P&A

Curt draws on extensive experience in the construction industry, where he has focused his professional life since 1979 as both a construction lawyer and an industry executive. He served as President and Chief Operating Officer of an ENR-400 construction company. He is Board Certified in Construction Law by the Texas Board of Legal Specialization. He has taught construction law and construction contract management in 22 US states and in Canada, Puerto Rico, Switzerland, Malaysia, and Cyprus.  He has also taught construction law at the undergraduate and graduate level at US universities including Colorado State University and Georgia Tech. 

Curt is an active cyclist.  He is a Hall of Fame fundraiser for the Texas BP MS 150 bike ride from Houston to College Station and was recently named to the Lone Star MS Society’s Fundraising Committee.  

Denis Ducran - P&A

Denis works with contractors and construction industry professionals, providing practical counsel regarding risk management, contract preparation and negotiations, litigation, arbitration, and mediation. His construction industry experience began with practicing architecture in Houston before starting his legal career. Denis is among a limited group of attorneys in the country who hold licenses in both law and architecture. His architectural background combined with his six-year tenure as Vice President and General Counsel of an ENR 400 general contractor offers clients a unique and fundamental understanding of the risks involved in construction.

Denis serves as an executive officer on the Industry Advisory Board at the University of Houston’s Cullen College of Engineering Department of Construction Management, where he has taught CNST 4302 Construction Law and Ethics since 2010. He remains closely involved with the construction industry, having served on the Education Committee for the Associated General Contractors Houston Chapter since 2017. He is frequently called upon to speak publicly and lead presentations on a variety of construction law topics around the country.

Denis was among the first class of attorneys to become Board Certified in Construction Law by the Texas Board of Legal Specialization. Denis has been recognized by Best Lawyers for his contributions in Construction Law from 2020 to 2024 and Texas Super Lawyers in 2022 and 2023.

Samantha Hutchison - Brookstone

Samantha Hutchison is Chief Financial Officer and co-owner of Brookstone Construction, a commercial general contractor/construction manager serving the greater Houston area for more than 60 years. With 25 years of financial management experience in the construction industry, she is responsible for the accuracy, timeliness and integrity of Brookstone’s financial reporting and controls, as well as oversight for banking, surety, risk management and IT.

Samantha is an active member of the Construction Financial Management Association (CFMA) both nationally and locally, serving as the 2017-2018 National Chairman. She is a graduate of Texas A&M University and is a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) in the State of Texas as well as a Certified Construction Industry Financial Professional (CCIFP).

Stormy Mayfield - P&A

Stormy has spent the majority of her career assisting clients across the nation in a variety of complex litigation matters, with a focus on construction and labor, and employment. She also assists clients in drafting and negotiating contracts, advising on corporate formation, and governance and compliance matters in a proactive effort to avoid litigation. Prior to joining Peckar & Abramson, Stormy prosecuted and defended administra­tive protests before regional offices of the Small Business Administration, the Small Business Administration’s Office of Hearings and Appeals, the Government Accountability Office, and the Armed Services Board of Contract Appeals.

She devotes much of her time towards resolving disputes related to commercial and residential construction defects, warranty issues, breach of contract claims between general contractors, subcontractors, and owners, breach of contract, breach of fiduciary duty suits, collective action wage and hour claims, employment discrimination, sexual/racial harassment, and wrongful discharge.

Stormy earned her B.A. in Psychology from Sewanee: University of the South and her J.D. from South Texas College of Law. She is a member of the Houston Bar Association.
